This is Love 3.0

1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…”

This youth generation has more anxiety, phobias, stress, and mental illness surrounding it than seemingly any previous generation.  Studies say that up to 10% of youth are dealing with a mental illness of some sort.  How do we serve this generation in the midst of that level of pain and fear? Tozer boldlystated:
To know that love is of God and to enter into the secret place leaning upon the arm of the Beloved—this and only this can cast out fear. (A.W. Tozer, Holy, p. 99).

“This is Love” is more than cute slogan…it’s a fear killer. As a generation gathers this weekend we believe the presence of God can push back the darkness and shine light in the darkest corners of the human heart.  But this is not just for “them”, it’s for us too! It’s for our own spiritual doubts, our deepest fears, and our moments of anxious stress with the “just too many things to do” and “too few hours to do it”…no matter what the fears are, take them to the secret place of God’s love and breathe, rest, and lean. It seems a contradiction but our greatest and most effective work may actually come out of the place of rest.
To be honest, I’m not good at this one. The nauseating, anxious, and overwhelming feelings hit me all too often when I look into the abyss of that never ending to-do list.
So today I’m reading a familiar and favourite passage. Luke 11:38-42 (The Message):
As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”
I know what character in this episode that I most resemble. How about you? Who are you in the story? Today I want for you all the thing that you can only discover while sitting at His feet…the ESSENTIAL thing…the full meal deal. So today rest in His perfect love and feast at His table…the one He’s prepared for us…not the one we’re rushing around trying to prepare for Him. If we do that, maybe, just maybe, we’ll be those fear-less leaders who will inspire a generation to truly be fear-less!
